I have been running my own arts and crafts business "Gunnel Tjäder Form och hantverk" in Kiruna since 1996. Wool prints inspired by the Arctic, the design of handcrafted items in reindeer leather and the traditional painting in the Torne Valley style form the basis of my work. I find inspiration for my creations in the Torne Valley, in my home town of Kiruna, and in particular from fantastic Lapland. My CV>>
I have my roots in the village of Kitkiöjoki in the north of Tornedalen (the Torne Valley), so I have a soft spot for the Tornedalen style of folk art painting. I gained my knowledge of folk art painting, ancient painting techniques and materials when I was a student of the late Paulus Aili, the conservator.
In 2003 I was awarded the Gold Diploma of the Colour Academy in Stockholm for decorative painting, having completed the Academy's advanced training course in decorative painting.
I work with textile prints, screen print, on wool. The wool prints become both large-scale artworks and décor on my reindeer leather products. The Northern Lights are a recurring theme in my wool prints, both large and small-scale
